  1. Really great documentary! My only complaint about the culture of monetizing 'Shanzhai' is often times the original creator is going through debugging issues that aren't obvious for the copy cats. So the copy cats cut corners that NEED to be squared-off for the product to function. So more often then not the fault is passed to the consumers and the idea of pushing an idea or product further ends up with the opposite effect and people ignore the emerging idea because they are buggy or problematic. For example, think about how the hoverboards were catching on fire. I'm sure somewhere along secret history of making fakes, an inexperienced copy cat didn't know enough the product and accidentally downgraded some parts that couldn't be downgraded and turned the device into a fire hazard. That sort of stuff is scary when you apply it to much more important projects stuff like bridges/buildings/elevator security measures/power-hungry electronics. And it's a part of the culture that is runs deep. In-fact to prove my point, during the documentary there's a scene where people were walking up and down a broken escalator.

  2. The guy said that after 5 years they were looking forward to seeing "Made in China" becoming a good thing. Five years ahead and I'm very happy with my Xiaomi phone.

  3. Everything that i have seen in the documentary, is not an original idea… copying and being able to produce it a lot faster are still the major points. It's amazing how quick they are… but you still need the real innovations… I am not sure how it will progress if no one cares to really innovate anything anymore. (won't happen imo)

It is an interesting documentary, but seems a bit like propaganda… (correction, they show a bit of issues later on in the video.)

  4. Is there a follow up on this? Curious if this empowerment of makers/ entrepreneurship is still happening today. (Not referring to covid, but more so crackdown on company power and closing of borders)

  5. No Silicon Valley is different and these little shops are existing in Paris too. If you are considering it is as Silicon Valley, then I am as some strangers or tourists want to see Chinese monuments or Chinese computers. It’s s Polytechnic school and space X. It’s different. Polytechnicians, the X, are from army and they keep their graduation for life but Space X is an private company which is working with NASA. As X movies, it’s different too. It’s as orange and other suppliers . If they were independent, only public workers could have an Orange network, or public workers with entire family home and public graduated, and other some private suppliers for private ones. And public from people can use the private network they want with been payed by state. That’s life and it’s not in both directions. When someone is telling me from public, it works better in private. It ‘s their stability in public about payment and some positions work well. Not automatically the network supplier. Regards.

  6. Isn't this also part of the cause for all the horrible Chinese electronic knockoffs? That person at the 30 minute mark is literally bragging about knocking off the iphone with an "identical" model. Sorry buddy (or lady??) that's not okay and it is not even close to the standard a regular iphone has when being manufactured. Not cool.

Oh jeeze posted this around the 30 minute mark originally. Are you really promoting stealing others people's blood sweat and tears and actually claiming ANY of those models are "much better versions?". Wow you are really kidding yourself. I lost a lot of respect for Wired watching this.

  7. We need a followup, 5 years have passed so one 5 year plan later basically. now I read a lot about the smart city, all buses and taxis are electric, which here in the west we get promised, but not much is happening lol. and it seems the production capacities are still there, however now it is more about the unicorns in shenzhen, and how they are big in patents, bigger than european countries it seems

  8. I write simple philosophy. Something i wrote in 2018 applies here,

    "America, how's your Chinese?"
    0000X06APR2018

And on another note, that cigar guy is a Chinese James Hetfield.
